What do statistics say?
731,900 job vacancies were created in the last quarter. This number is almost 26% more than the vacancies in the same period in 2019. Statistics Canada did not have the data for the period of March to September 2020. Therefore, the only data available for comparison was two years ago.
Apart from the increase in vacancies, even the average wages rose to $22.85 per hour, which was $1.55 higher than the 2019 data. This change can be attributed to the movements in the industry and the nature of positions being filled.
Quebec and Ontario saw the largest increase of all other provinces.
Sectors with high vacancies
Almost 1 in 7 job vacancies were in the health care and social assistance segment. The number of jobs increased from 40,000 to 108,800 during this two-year gap.
The next industry to see an increase in jobs was the retail sector. They had 84,300 open positions in the previous quarter.
Empty positions were also at a record high in the construction industry at 62,600. Carpenters, trade helpers, and electricians had the major chunk of the openings.
Statistics Canada has projected a future rise of 8% in this quarter.
