Express Entry is the main entry that Canada invites the economic skilled immigrants. The IRCC made several changes to the Express Entry class to meet the year’s target. At first, IRCC transformed the temporary resident candidates into permanent residents. So, only candidates from the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) were invited. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) was kept on hold to process the backlogs of Express Entry applications. The reason to process the CEC and PNP applications is they are less likely to face COVID-19 disruptions, and 90% of the candidates reside within Canada. Secondly, to meet the labor market needs.
As a result of the shift, the IRCC has been selecting the highest-ranking CEC and PNP candidates rather than inviting the highest-ranking candidates from the Express Entry pool. It largely impacted the FSWP candidates, and only 6,795 of FSWP candidates got the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR). Hence, the strategy worked well for the CEC candidates. But for the FSWP candidates only below 600 applications were processed from the month of September and October. There are still about 1,65,000 FSWP candidates in the Express Entry pool waiting for the process.
However, IRCC is still on its way of reaching the year’s target which is around 3,14,000 as of October 2021. Hence, IRCC is discussing how to reach the next year’s target and what Express Entry to implement.
