Canada plans to allow the temporary worker’s spouses to be eligible for a work permit in a two-year measure designed to ease its labor shortage crisis.
In a phased method starting in January, the temporary worker’s spouses and working-age children can work in Canada.
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said the move would “help companies find the labors they need to fill their work openings by increasing work permits to family members at all skill levels”.
“Our government is going to remain helping companies overcome labor lacks, while also supporting the comfort of employees and bonding their families,” he said.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) says the new evaluation will see the families of 200,000 temporary workers become qualified to work in Canada.
The stage approached will start with those with work permits over the high-wage Temporary Foreign Worker Program and the International Mobility Program stream in January.
Phases two and three, including first the TFWP low-wage stream and then agricultural labor, will be rolled out in due course.
“This temporary measure targets to expand the emotional well-being, physical health, and financial stability of workers by keeping families together,” IRCC said.
“As a consequence, it is anticipated that the employee will better integrate into their general work environment and community.”

“Labour is the number one challenge facing Canada’s tourism division as we position ourselves for post-pandemic development,” said Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Tourism.
Canada issued over 645,000 work permits between January and October this year, which is approximately four times the 163,000 issued over a similar period the previous year.
